Family Video Top Movie Rental #70 - Twilight
High school romance is difficult enough to navigate when both people are human. But for 17-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart, INTO THE WILD) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE), Edward’s life as a vampire complicates things even more. At first, when Bella moves from sunny Phoenix to the rainiest corner of Washington State, she isn’t sure where she fits in at her new high school. Then she meets Edward, an ethereal beauty of a boy whose unnatural speed and strength lead Bella to the conclusion that her new crush is one of the undead. Suddenly, Bella’s boring life is transformed; she’s surrounded by love and danger in equal parts, thanks to the hunger of Edward and others of his kind.

Family Video Top Movie Rental #72 - Planet of the Apes (2001)
In remaking this classic sci-fi film, director Tim Burton takes on a whopping challenge and succeeds. Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is part of a space station crew that, in the year 2029, is conducting experiments in training genetically engineered chimps to perform complex away missions. When Leo’s chimp disappears into a worm hole, Leo unadvisedly goes after him, ending up in a parallel world in which the monkeys are the keepers and humans are traded and caged like animals. It’s a horrifying place, and the whole atmosphere, colored by Burton’s direction and Rick Baker’s incredible special effects makeup, is charged with terror. Leo becomes a heroic figure in the eyes of his defeated human brethren, and he puts his trust, and his hope for escape, in Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a forward-thinking ape who believes in human rights. But Leo has formidable opponents in Thade (Tim Roth) and Attar (Michael Clark Duncan), two power-hungry, testosterone-charged apes who wish to rid the planet of humans altogether. This excellent rendition of the classic PLANET OF THE APES (1968) is more than just a remake: it includes intense physicality on the part of the actors, complex mythology lacing the story, chilling philosophical realizations, and an amazing cameo by original star Charlton Heston. The combination of those complex parts makes for a riveting viewing experience.

Simpsons’ Springfield Comes to Life at Universal Studios
Finally, the longest running scripted show on television is getting its own theme park. This summer you will be able to walk down the street of the once fictional Springfield, and even visit some of Homer’s favorite places like Moe’s Tavern (which, of course, will serve Duff beer that is brewed exclusively for Universal Orlando) or Krusty Burger where you can try a Krusty-certified meat sandwich. Not to mention all of the rides like Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl.
“This will be a must-see experience for Simpsons fans all over the world,” said Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative. “For the first time ever, they’re going to be able to enter a world that they’ve only seen on television – and we’re really excited to bring that world to life.” [universalorlando.com]
Which part of Springfield do you want to visit most? Me, personally, I can’t wait to pig-out at Lard Lads! Mmmm, doughnuts…

Family Video Top Movie Rental #73 - Scooby-Doo: The Movie
In this live action rethink of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, director Raja Gosnell puts Fred (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) back into the Mystery Machine with a CGI version of the Scooby-Doo. After parting ways to protest Fred’s self-centered treatment of the Mystery Inc. gang, they are brought back together by Emile Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) to help solve a ghoulish mystery at his teen resort and fun park, Spooky Island.
Although SCOOBY-DOO is primarily a live action movie, Gosnell keeps the characters and visuals cartoonish at all times. For fans of the series, all of the expected trappings are present (from Fred’s ascot to the inevitable “meddling kids” line from the bad guy), but the film also pokes fun at these elements throughout, managing to balance kiddie fun with a more grown-up self-mocking. The CGI Scooby is both convincingly lifelike and clearly make-believe, with action that is more silly than scary so kids and adults can enjoy the film together.
